kron4's maureen kelly has uncovered new details about the pacifica man. who government officials say pulled the trigger, then turned the gun on himself. facebook photos posted by sgt oo-say-bio lopez.better known as levi to his friends.show him goofing off in his dress blues.making funny faces has he runs in formation in camouflage.and proudly posing with action movie star chuck norris. .an american flag flies over his family home in pacifica.the people inside saying they did not want to talk to the media at this time. a neighbor who did not want to appear on camera says she was surprised to hear the allegations against the young man who would wave to her when he occasionally came home to visit his family. who she described as nice people. according to the marine corp.the 25 year old joined up seven years ago. serving in both the afghanistan and iraq wars.he was heavily decorated.earning 11 awards. he was promoted to sergeant in 2011and was a tactics instructor, specializing as a machine gunner at the officer candidate school. that's where the lopez allegedly turned his gun onto 19 year old lance coporal sara castromata of oakley, ca and 23 year old corporal jacob wooley.of mississippi. one of lopez's facebook

friends who served with him posted a comment that he was quote a great marine, one the the best the corps had.he made a terrible decision and i feel so bad for the lives that were taken but lopez was an amazing man, not a coward at all. he just made that terrible mistake. i love and miss him.: rip brother, semper fi. maureen kelly kron 4 news >> we are also learning more about the young bay area victim, 19 year old lance corporal sara castromata. kron four's philippe djegal reports. these are photos of lance corporal sara castromata posted on her facebook page, and others shared with kron 4 from her family. she was 19 years old. born and raised in oakley. and, via instagram, kron four has learned that castromata is a recent graduate from liberty high school here in brentwood. she joined the marine corps

in december 20-11, serving as a warehouse clerk. last month, she was promoted to her current rank. though she was not deployed. she earned a number of awards. including the national defense medal. and, global war on terrorism service medal. friends and family say she was best known for her charity work. they say she would often volunteer for her church. she is described as a melo person. she has two sisters. philippe djegal, kron 4 news >> friends of castromata are talking about dealing with the loss. in a story you'll only see on kron4.

are also more than 9-thousand runners turned out early sunday for the oakland running festival. the festival featured events ranging from the full marathon and half-marathon to a four-person team relay, a 5k run, and kids run. the event, which started and ended at snow park was expected to generate nearly 9 million dollars for the city of oakland, with 750- thousand dollars going to local charities. still ahead, it may

discovered that a briefcase inside it had been moved. the man notified authorities and a bomb squad was called in. the mall was evacuated while authorities investigated for four hours. nothing dangerous was discovered. >> authorities say a 46- year-old man was rushed to a hospital burn unit after lighting himself on fire at an orange county nail salon. police say the man walked into the salon, doused himself with flammable liquid and set fire to himself just after noon sunday. someone inside the salon rushed to put out the flames. investigators have not determined a motive, but police say the man's estranged wife was working in the salon. the man has not been identified. nobody else was hurt. >> police in georgia say an anonymous tip helped them make arrests in the shooting in a stroller. someone saw a person crouched in the back seat of a vehicle as it drove away from the shooting on thursday. detectives followed up and arrested a 14-year-old suspect.

the boy's statements led them to take 17-year-old de'marquise elkins into custody. >> as airport officials in birmingham, alabama try to figure out how a 300-pound arrival-departure panel fell onto a family friday, the mother of a boy who was killed remains hospitalized with her own injuries and still unaware of what happened. she's in intensive care and unconscious. the family had vacationed in florida and was flying home to kansas. >> a glendale couple was cruising around.when the couple's car went airborne and landed on a neighbor's house. galnia wynn says she and her husband were coming down a hill.but couldn't stop their car as they turned the corner. when she opened the door.she saw the edge of the roof. been a smash, crash, bowen. an the neighbor said is that there has been an accident smash-crash boom. >> the back end of car rested on the edge of a retaining wall. a neighbor heard the

in a story you'll only see military officials say a soldier from hayward has died from wounds suffered last week in afghanistan. the department of defense says 31-year-old sergeant 1st class james grissom died thursday from small arms fire on march 18. grissom was assigned to a special forces group and was shot in remote southeast afghanistan bordering pakistan. police are investigating the death of a man after he was found in the san francisco bay. the body was found in the bay near the 300 block of west cutting street in richmond yesterday around three in the afternoon. when officers arrived they found the man in the water, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. police have determined that the death does not appear to be a homicide and deemed it an "unexplained death" the coast guard is searching the water off of half moon bay for a 22-year- old who disappeared from a beach. it all happened yesterday around 2:45. helicopter and a rescue boat point. authorities say the man was roosevelt beach with friends who said they turned around and he was gone.

the coast guard says there is no confirmation the man entered the water. the 22-year-old was last seen wearing a black tee shirt and shorts. anyone with information is asked to contact the coast guard. devil's slide. the coastal section of state highway one in san mateo county is getting set to reopen. two tunnels will open by tomorrow morning as part of a 439-million-dollar transportation project to provide a more reliable way to travel between pacifica and half moon bay. it's a section of the highway that is notorious for rock slides and traffic accidents. a ribbon cutting will be held today at 11 this morning. new changes are coming to the golden gate bridge this week. and this morning drivers can expect to see those changes start to take place.

cyprus has reached a deal to stave off bank collapse. the deal will shrink cyprus' financial industry and clear way for a bailout the

country desperately needs to avoid collapse. the deal comes days after frantic negotiations that followed the rejection by cypriot lawmakers. this deal includes a bailout program to restructure the country's two biggest banks -- bank of cyprus and popular bank of cyprus. without a deal, the tiny state risked losing emergency funding from the european central bank as early as tuesday. that would have meant financial collapse and almost certain exit from the eurozone. >> boeing is planning to lay off about 800 workers in washington by the end of the year. the company said it will cut another 1,200 to 1,500 jobs through attrition and other means. the job cuts will be mostly from the 747 and 787 jet programs. the company says production rates on those airplanes will not be affected. boeing has not issued layoff notices yet. san jose wants to keep samsung in the silicon valley. the city council is expected to approve $7 million in incentives to keep the company from moving to texas.

>> a 7-year-old oakland boy drowned in a backyard pool in fairfield saturday. the boy was found floating face down in the pool at the house belonging to family friends. his parents were not there at the time of the incident. an adult who lived at the house found the boy and called police. dispatchers talked the adult through c-p-r until emergency crews arrived. the boy was taken to northbay medical center in fairfield, where he was pronounced dead. the incident is under investigation, but no foul play is suspected. it was a very sad day in the north bay yesterday. hundreds came out to remember 14 year old marcus johnson. he died last week at the marysville raceway -- struck and killed in a freak accident by his cousin's racecar.

stone, kron 4 news. >> after a 90-minute stand off with police, a novato resident is now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. this is video from our helicopter partnership with a-b-c-seven news, over the scene friday. someone reported the suspect starting a fire in a home near the corner of center road and stasia drive. relatives say that the suspect was acting up and in possible need of psychiatric help. after talking with police the suspect surrendered. no one was hurt. and and stockton is poised to become the most populous city in the nation to enter bankruptcy when its trial begins today in federal court. creditors who lent stockton money are challenging its chapter 9 bankruptcy petition, but most observers say the city of 300,000 will be successful. its largest creditors are bond insurers who helped the city refinance pension debt.

police in south san francisco are searching for a serial arsonist who started three fires in the city over the weekend. police said two fires were lit in orange park on memorial drive and a third was started near the 500 block of el camino real. fiske all three fires were quickly extinguished and caused little damage, police said. no suspect information was immediately available. police search for arsonist this weekend police said two fires were lit in orange park on immediately available. the san mateo county sheriff's office is warning rash of 'door-knock' burglaries that have occurred in residential neighborhoods around san according to the sheriff's office, potential burglars have been approaching homes and knocking on doors to see if residents are home.
